Kernel 1 –
Digital Identity Jan. 3rd-8th (Liminal day – Jan. 8th)

Welcome to our first kernel which will run for 6 days.

This will be a busy time as we will need to set up several technologies and get through a fair amount of content around Digital Identity. Instead of making one long list of to-dos I’ve broken things up between digital identity content activities and technologies that we need to set up to be able to communicate with one another.

SNC participants take some time to get set up with Slack. Invite should be in your email. Slack will be a communication tool just for our group – it does not have as wide of a reach as twitter. Consider how you would like to receive notifications – download apps (mobile or desktop) if that will help you stay connected but consider how notifications impact your life. Update your Slack profile how you see fit with an image and description. Introduce yourself in the #commonroom_ channel.

Create your own V&R map and post it to our Slack under the Kernel 1 Digital Identity channel. If you feel comfortable post it more widely on say twitter or your blog.

Set up a blog. There are several options here including an option to own your own domain. Choose a blogging platform and customize the look and feel how you would like.

SNC folks – Remember that we have a program to get you one year of a domain and hosting if that is something you would like to learn more about. Also, if you would rather not create a blogging platform I can create an account for you at snc.digpins.org and you can blog here.

There is one synchronous session for SNC participants during this kernel using google hangout. Make sure you have a place to take the call and the technology needed for video calls (webcam, microphone, strong internet connection). We also need to find a common time to connect so post your availability to Slack.

Blog

Post a longer reflection around Kernel 1 on your blog. You can blog about whatever you would like and there is no “due date” but you should think of the liminal day (Jan 8th – the day we transition to the next kernel) as a pivot point. Though you can post about whatever you want some ideas just to seed things might be:

  • Nuances of digital identity from the readings that you found helpful or challenging
  • Get personal – how did you choose to approach your digital identity
  • What are the positives and negatives of digital identity and how does digital identity impact/influence ‘in the flesh’ identity?

Finally, you have to promote your post. You decide how far of a reach you want it to have. At minimum post it to the group slack. Want it to have a broader reach – post it to twitter – use #DigPINS

Set up a twitter account and customize it with a profile pic. This may be a picture of you but think about that as you can choose other pictures too. How do you want to represent yourself?

It is important for us to think about our use of technology and how we ask students to use technology from a critical lens. There are often powerful forces who profit, in a variety of ways, from our use of technology.  In what ways are we vulnerable when we are online? What do we do to get students to examine their digital identities? Consider this case issue with digital identity:

Alec Couros’ is a professor and online educator. His digital identity is vast and he regularly publishes photos of himself and his family online. For the last 10 years he has battled scammers who have used his photos to create fake profiles used in romance scams. He continually runs into problems when trying to report these fake accounts to the platforms that the scammers are using to host them.
